Holocaust Survivor Stories - Grade 6-8 guest speaker

Over the last few weeks, our grades 6 to 8 students had the privilege of listening to Dori Ekstein share the inspiring stories of her parents, both Holocaust survivors. Dori is a former classroom teacher and now works in schools to educate students about the Holocaust.

First she spoke with the grade 6s and shared her mother’s story. Her mother, Mina, survived two and a half years in hiding during the years of the Holocaust. A few weeks later, she spoke to the grade 7s and 8s about her father, David. David survived life in Auschwitz, the Concentration Camp. Following the Holocaust, Mina and David found each other and eventually built a beautiful life and family here in Toronto.

We thank Dori for sharing her parents’ stories, educating us about the strength of the Jewish people before, during, and after the Holocaust, and helping us all learn about and understand the importance of standing up to antisemitism and hate in all forms. 

K-2 Winter Wonderland Family Dance (December 18)

Attention Kindergarten to Grade 2 families! We are hosting a Winter Wonderland Community Dance on Monday, December 18th from 5pm - 6pm in our school gymnasium.

It's $5/family on SchoolCash Online or at the door. 

Please note: Families must accompany their children to the dance. Students will not be permitted in the dance without a family member present.

Hindu Heritage Month

The latest episode of the Tune In YRDSB podcast looks back on Hindu Heritage Month in November. 

Participants share their personal journeys, and reflect on the diversity of the Hindu culture and the importance of creating safe and affirming environments for Hindu students and staff.

Mabel's Labels for the Holiday

When the school breaks for the holiday, we will be donating all of the lost and found items to a local charity. Please ask your children to look for any lost items before they leave on December 22nd. To help reduce items in the lost and found, please consider labelling all clothing items and other school products. Feel free to use a sharpie marker or consider Mabel's Labels.

It's almost time to order your next package of lunches. The next package will run from January to March Break. Since orders are purchased as a package, refunds cannot be issued due to student absences.

Winter Weather Reminders

With the arrival of winter weather, we wanted to provide some important reminders about the steps we take to keep students safe when severe weather occurs.

School Transportation Cancellations

School transportation (buses and taxis) may be cancelled due to extreme cold or inclement weather. On these days, schools will remain open unless otherwise stated. If school transportation is cancelled in the morning, it will also be cancelled in the afternoon. Any lunch programs and field trips will also be cancelled. Lunch program days will be made up later in the year.

Families should use their best judgement to decide whether to send their children to school on extreme cold or inclement weather days. Students will not be penalized for missing school on those days. For safety reasons, please ensure you let the school know if your child will not be attending school that day.

School Closures

Emergency closures will be considered when conditions may not be safe for students and staff members to attend school for the full day. This may include events that significantly limit school operations or access to the school site (e.g. widespread, prolonged power failures or downed power lines).

In keeping with our current practice, we will continue to keep our schools open as much as possible. However, it is important that families have alternate childcare arrangements planned for the rare occasions when schools may be closed. Before and aftercare programs will not operate if schools are closed.

Communication to Families

Decisions about school transportation and school closures will be made as early as possible and no later than 6:00am. We will do our best to notify families in advance when we may be considering closing and Board offices. Transportation cancellations or school closures are communicated through:

As of today, the December Lunch Program has started. If you did not place an order for lunches in December, please remember to send your child with a lunch.
