Pride Month: Raising The Progress Pride Flag

As a school board, we remain strongly committed to creating working and learning environments where all students and staff can bring their full identities, feel welcome and valued, and work and learn in an environment that enables them to be successful. We know that our students are more likely to learn, engage and succeed in school when they know and feel that they matter and belong. This is particularly poignant in June when we recognize and celebrate the history and contributions of our 2SLGBTQI+ community.

During Pride month (June) Aurora Grove PS, along with all schools in YRDSB, will raise the Progress Pride flag. 

On June 1st, grades 1 to 8 will attend an assembly to learn about Pride month. Then after lunch our entire school will go outside for a flag raising ceremony of the Progress Pride flag. It will be flown for the month of June. 

The significance of the colours in the Progress Pride flag are as follows:

• yellow background with the purple circle recognizes intersex experiences

• pink, white, and blue represent trans experiences, and

• black and brown represent intersectional racialized experiences

Flying the flag is a visible commitment to creating safe, inclusive spaces.

Flying the flag is a commitment to speaking out against hate and discrimination whenever and wherever we see it. 

Flying the flag demonstrates that we are all continuing to learn and grow.

Flying the flag creates spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ students and allies.

Discover Kindergarten - Rescheduled

To the families of our new JK and SK students,

We want to apologize for having to cancel our Discover Kindergarten event. Unfortunately, some of our new JK and SK families did not receive notice of the cancellation and ended up coming to the school yesterday evening. We are very sorry for this inconvenience. 

We acknowledge how important the first year of school is for our new students and families and realize many of you were looking forward to this event. 

We are happy to share that we have rescheduled the event for Thursday, June 22nd from 5pm - 6pm. 

We hope you’ll be able to join us. 

Spotlight Junior & Intermediate French - Public Speaking Contest!

Aurora Grove couldn’t be more proud of our group of brave students who signed up to participate in the French Public Speaking Contest organized by Ms. Serbu. They wrote their own speeches and practised both in class and at home for a smooth presentation. Their commitment to performing and their courage to speak in front of their peers in French is inspiring. Everyone who listened to them in class was motivated to do their very best after witnessing their peers' dedication to this subject. Thank you for setting the standards high and for choosing challenge over comfort! Congratulations!! 

Social Media & Online Safety (Guest Speaker) - This Friday!

There is still time to RSVP for our guest speaker, Paul Davis. 

Paul will be speaking about all the apps your children are using or will be using at some point soon. 

He will explain how to check their privacy settings (and your own too!). 

He'll review how to help your children stay safe on line.  

Paul speaks all over North America and we were fortunate to book him on one of his last available dates this school year. Your kids in grades 3-8 will be hearing from him during the day. Don't miss your opportunity to hear from him yourself.

Spotlight Kindergarten - Ms. Baumann/Ms. Walkley and Ms. Hamel/Ms. Drodge

The students from rooms 117 and 118 are creating a flower garden next to their kindergarten yard. Their hard work is an extension to their planting and farm discussions in class. The students have been removinig weeds and planting seeds generously donated by parents.
They hope you'll be able to see the fruits of their labours by the end of June!
During the gardening, the children have noticed all sorts of creepy crawlies which has piqued a new interest with the kindergarten students. 

 

Pets on School Property

A reminder to parents/guardians who walk their pets to school:

• All dogs must be on a leash and kept outside the school.
• Consider leaving your pets at home. Larger animals sometimes intimidate smaller children.
  
• Fenced in kindergarten play areas are off limits to pets.
• Excrement must be removed by pet owners. Please help keep our property clean and healthy.
  
• This does not apply to service animals.

Every Student Counts Survey

Dear families,

As you may know, York Region District School Board is currently engaging students in the
Every Student Counts Survey.

On April 24, 2023, families received an email notifying them that the survey period is
open. Families of students in Kindergarten-Grade 3 will have now received an invitation
letter from their school, which includes a survey link and survey code to complete the
survey at home.

We thank everyone who has already completed the survey. We have made the decision to extend the survey deadline. If you have not yet completed the survey, please consider doing so by May 19, 2023. 

We appreciate you taking the time to help us better understand our students and their experiences in school.

If you didn’t receive the survey invitation letter or have misplaced it, please contact your
child’s school.

Ice Dawgs Are Back!

Starting Thursday, May 25th, students can purchase chocolate chip cookie and vanilla ice cream sandwiches for $2.00. Don't miss out on this refreshing treat as the days get warmer!

Student reps will visit classrooms every Thursday around 10:20am for Ice Dawg sales. Please have your toonies ready!

Funds raised will support the grade 8 graduation.

Public speaker Paul Davis will be coming to Aurora Grove PS on Friday, May 26th to speak to students from grades 3 to 8 during the day.

Paul Davis will also be coming back at 6pm to speak about social media and online safety for community members.
