Spotlight: Mr. O'Reilly's Class

Mr. O'Reilly's class is learning about Black History by reading about transformative figures and the ways they helped others. With each lesson, they added to their poster, aiming to spread the values of kindness and respect for all.

 

Spotlight: Ms. Meyers & Ms. Walkley's Kindergarten Class

In honour of Earth Day, Ms. Meyers' & Ms. Walkley's Kindergarten class made paper mache Earths. 

They promised to take care of our home, the Earth!

Spotlight: Ms. Currie Grade 6

Recently, Ms. Currie's grade 6 class took some time to learn about local businesses owned and run by Black community members. They explored the business’ websites, learned about the products being sold and services provided as well as about the owners of the businesses themselves. 

Next, they created posters to advertise the Black owned businesses and showcased them on a bulletin board in the intermediate hallway.

Spotlight: Ms Meyers' & Ms Walkley's class (Lunar New Year)

Ms Meyers' and Ms Walkley's class have been learning about the Lunar New Year and the Zodiac animals.  They learned that their year two students are the dog (faithful, courageous, smart, and warm hearted) and their year one students are the pig (playful, friendly, sensitive and intelligent).

The students are very grateful to the families who generously donated the materials to make their beautiful bulletin board outside their classroom.

Spotlight: Kindergarten (Winter Walk Month)

Today is Winter Walk To School Day and February is Winter Walk Month!

The Kindergarten students at Aurora Grove PS worked very hard to create a few Public Service Announcements about how to stay safe in the Winter. Please check out our superstars on Instagram! The first one is already posted with a couple more to come this month.

Spotlight: Intermediates

Mr. Cuello's and Ms. Blom's classes transformed their classrooms into Starbooks Cafe today. They had a menu of items to 'taste' including a variety of different books. Students had the chance to explore a selection of books, provide their opinion, and share their thinking with the rest of the class. Their reviews will help them form their upcoming Literature Circle groups.

Spotlight - Ms. Chan's & Ms. MacRae's classes

Ms. Chan and Ms. MacRae's class both created murals to be displayed at the The Markham Fair Grounds. The Markham Fair Grounds hosts an Art Exhibit yearly that displays artwork created by students across the York Region District School Board. The theme for the Grade 3 and 4's this year was, "On a Field Trip". Ms. MacRae​'s class' mural included places that their class could visit this year and Ms. Chan's class' mural is an illustration of a field trip to the jungle.

Spotlight - Grade 6 & Grade 2 Classroom Buddies

We love seeing students across divisions working together! This week, Ms. Currie's grade 6 class partnered with Ms. Payne's grade 2 class in the library to read some books.

Spotlight Junior & Intermediate French - Public Speaking Contest!

Aurora Grove couldn’t be more proud of our group of brave students who signed up to participate in the French Public Speaking Contest organized by Ms. Serbu. They wrote their own speeches and practised both in class and at home for a smooth presentation. Their commitment to performing and their courage to speak in front of their peers in French is inspiring. Everyone who listened to them in class was motivated to do their very best after witnessing their peers' dedication to this subject. Thank you for setting the standards high and for choosing challenge over comfort! Congratulations!! 

Spotlight Kindergarten - Ms. Baumann/Ms. Walkley and Ms. Hamel/Ms. Drodge

The students from rooms 117 and 118 are creating a flower garden next to their kindergarten yard. Their hard work is an extension to their planting and farm discussions in class. The students have been removinig weeds and planting seeds generously donated by parents.
They hope you'll be able to see the fruits of their labours by the end of June!
During the gardening, the children have noticed all sorts of creepy crawlies which has piqued a new interest with the kindergarten students.

Spotlight Grade 3/4 - Ms. Chan's class

Ms. Chan's grade 3/4 class recently read the book Moon's Ramadan by Natasha Khan Kazi and learned how Ramadan is celebrated all around the world. They followed up with a flip book activity where all the students shared how they can show kindness and compassion to those who are observing/celebrating Ramadan.  

 

Spotlight Grade 2 - Ms. Aikin's class

 

Ms. Aikin's class and Mr. Zunker had fun creating these cool pieces of 2D and 3D art. They used warm and cool colurs to create Tim Hortons coffe cups! 

Spotlight Grade 3 - Ms. Nugent's Class

On March 23rd, the grade 3 students in Ms. Nugents class listened to a guest speaker from DogTales, a dog rescue and sanctuary. The students demonstrated great empathy for the animals that they learned about. It sparked some meaningful conversations about how to treat both animals and people kindly and with respect, regardless of their differences or perceived challenges. 

After the speaker left, each student was assigned a dog and created an adoption poster for them. They did such a fantastic job and each students took so much pride in completing their poster. 

Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary was so appreciative of their amazing work that they have shared their posters on their social media account and are receiving very positive responses from the community. 

**In fact, over the weekend, 5 dogs from the posters were adopted!

Spotlight Grade 7 & 8 - Ms. Lombardi's Classes

Our Core French students have been doing mini-projects featuring notable francophones to increase their cultural awareness and knowledge.  This particular project was an art integration and features the work of Le Pho, a Vietnamese artist who studied at both École des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The paintings of Le Pho are linked with Surrealist and Impressionist art movements. He was heavily influenced by Victor Tardieu. 
These are intermediate student representations of his actual artwork.  The medium was watercolour pencils on watercolour paper.
