Every Student Counts Survey

Student and family input is important to us. The York Region District School Board will be conducting the Every Student Counts Survey with students (Grades K-12) to help us better understand our student population and school communities. This past week and next week, students in Grades 4-12 will be invited to complete the student survey and will be provided with in-class time to complete it. Students from Grades K-3 will be invited to complete a survey at home with their parent, guardian or caregiver. Translated versions of the survey will be available. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Summer Learning Opportunities

Summer School

Emails for Summer School grades 6-8 will be coming home. Registration is through My Pathway Planner. The York Region District School Board offers a Grade 6, 7 & 8 Summer School program. This 15-day literacy and numeracy program is designed to reinforce curriculum and is not an acceleration opportunity. Students must register in the program for their current school grade. For example, a grade 7 student would register for the grade 7 program as it reinforces grade 7 content.

This program will be offered both in-person and through remote learning. For more information, please follow this link: SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM.

Summer Institute

Summer learning and fun activities for your children entering Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 Summer Institute offers academic, recreational and athletic programs and activities with intentional links to the Ontario Curriculum.

The program runs for five weeks during July and August.

It is offered at 10 locations in Richmond Hill, Markham, Stouffville, Newmarket, Vaughan and Georgina from 9:00am - 3:30pm.

Registration opened March 29, 2023 at 4:00pm. Families can register online.

Reach Ahead Program

The York Region District School Board will once again be offering Grade 8 Reach Ahead programs where students can earn a high school credit! This course is for students who are currently completing Grade 8 and entering Grade 9 this Fall. These 18-day acceleration courses start Wednesday, July 5 and end Friday, July 28. Students are required to attend class from 8:45 a.m. to 3:33 p.m., with two 15-minute scheduled breaks and a 40-minute lunch period. 

Register early to avoid disappointment. Decisions to run courses are based on sufficient enrolment and teacher availability.

Camp Black Brilliance

Camp Black Brilliance will offer families the opportunity to get to know the Kindergarten program and have their children experience their introduction to schooling in a way that is culturally responsive and affirming of their identity, through experiential learning. Register by June.

Affirming and Embracing Intersecting Queer Identities in the Classroom (guest speakers)

Recently, our students from grades 5 to 8 had the opportunity to learn from the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity. Following these lessons, our School Council suggested that bringing this learning to our school community would be appreciated. 

We would like to invite our community members to an evening with guest speakers from our school board's Inclusive School and Community Services Department. 

This talk will focus on affirming and embracing intersecting queer identities in the classroom in pursuit of creating identity-affirming spaces for students, staff, and families. 

We will examine the necessity of this work while building upon our understanding of some basics in our identities and best practices to support all students, including those who may identify as 2SLGBTQI+. 

We will also explore how we are upholding systemic inequities, and improve our ability to notice, name, and disrupt oppressive practices. We will take an intersectional approach to our shared learning to understand how systems of inequity interact with each other, with a particular focus on supporting the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

We hope you'll join us for this event.

World Autism Month

April is World Autism Month! World Autism month gives us the opportunity to all come together and share what we know and what our experiences with Autism are. It allows us to look at how Autism affects people’s everyday living and also gives us the opportunity to share and celebrate all of our differences such as our interests and things we are good at. World Autism month is all about embracing our differences.

Back on April 2nd, staff and students wore blue to acknowledge Autism Awareness Day. Mrs. Lawrence and Ms. Patrick showed their support by wearing their "I wear blue for Autism Awareness Day" t-shirts!

Spotlight Grade 3/4 - Ms. Chan's class

Ms. Chan's grade 3/4 class recently read the book Moon's Ramadan by Natasha Khan Kazi and learned how Ramadan is celebrated all around the world. They followed up with a flip book activity where all the students shared how they can show kindness and compassion to those who are observing/celebrating Ramadan.

Spotlight Grade 2 - Ms. Aikin's class

 

Ms. Aikin's class and Mr. Zunker had fun creating these cool pieces of 2D and 3D art. They used warm and cool colurs to create Tim Hortons coffe cups! 

International Day Of Pink - April 12

This day is when communities across Canada and across the world unite to celebrate diversity and raise awareness about the need to stop homophobia, transphobia, discrimination and all forms of bullying. On this annual day in April, individuals wear pink to show respect for diversity and to demonstrate support for learning and working environments which are safe and inclusive of people from all different backgrounds. All students and staff have the right to learn and work in environments that are free from discrimination and harassment. Acts of activism and solidarity can have an impact on our culture and society. The Day of Pink originated in Eastern Canada, after a few young students decided to stand up against homophobia, bullying and toxic masculinity (CBC). Although the first Day of Pink occurred 15 years ago, we continue to uphold the messaging and support for inclusion.

Spotlight Grade 3 - Ms. Nugent's Class

On March 23rd, the grade 3 students in Ms. Nugents class listened to a guest speaker from DogTales, a dog rescue and sanctuary. The students demonstrated great empathy for the animals that they learned about. It sparked some meaningful conversations about how to treat both animals and people kindly and with respect, regardless of their differences or perceived challenges. 

After the speaker left, each student was assigned a dog and created an adoption poster for them. They did such a fantastic job and each students took so much pride in completing their poster. 

Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary was so appreciative of their amazing work that they have shared their posters on their social media account and are receiving very positive responses from the community. 

**In fact, over the weekend, 5 dogs from the posters were adopted!

Way to go Ms. Nugent's class!

YRDSB Annual Budget Consultation Process

YRDSB is inviting staff, families, and community members to participate in the annual budget consultation process taking place until April 26, 2023. These opportunities for input provide the Board with important information about how staff and the broader community would like the budget to be allocated to continue supporting student achievement and well-being in York Region.

Survey: The online survey will be available until April 26, 2023.

Public Consultation Dates: In addition to the survey, two virtual consultation sessions will take place on the following dates and times:

Autism Ontario Camps Registration

Autism Ontario Camps Registration is now open. The following information is for families that are seeking a camp opportunity for a child with ASD. 

The camp will be located at a Public School in the Yonge and Elgin Mills area. Camper drop off is between 9am and 9:30am and pick up is between 3pm and 3:30pm. Campers are supported with at least 1:1 support and the fee to families for each week is $850. This includes the 1:1 support as well as all the outings and activities that occur that week.

Registration will remain open until April 16th and is NOT on a first come first serve basis.

April Parenting Sessions

We would like to share with our community information about various upcoming presentations for parents, guardians, caregivers and community members.

Raising Competent Teens (April 5th) will focus on strategies for your child to develop communication skills, self-discipline, good routines and problem solving skills.

Getting Teens Connected (April 19th) will focus on strategies to build your child’s confidence, encourage social skills, plan and meet commitments and developing positive, supportive friendships.

Separation Anxiety (April 25th) will help parents learn about the signs and symptoms of separation anxiety. The focus will be on strategies to calm your child’s separation anxiety and how to better prepare your child for the transition.
