Message from Our Trustee

It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of another school year. I hope that this has been a great school year for you and your child, and you continue to see evidence of your child’s learning and engagement at school.

As a school board, there are several things we have been focused on in recent months that I want to update you on.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Multi-Year Strategic Plan consultations. The plan sets our priorities and direction as a school board. Your input will help ensure our plan reflects both the priorities established by the Ministry of Education and the community we serve. The revised plan will be announced in the fall and I look forward to sharing those updates.

I also want to thank everyone who shared their feedback in the budget survey. Again, we want to ensure that the community has voice in these important decisions. We are committed to transparency and you can find information about the school board budget on the board website that will continue to be updated.

This is an exciting time of year as schools host end-of-year events including concerts and graduations. I want to offer my sincere congratulations to all of our students on your hard work this year, and a special congratulations to the graduating class of 2024. This is an important milestone and a celebration of years of perseverance, commitment, growth and learning. Graduates should feel proud of all they have accomplished. I wish you all the very best for the future and hope you continue to cherish the memories you have made in this school.

I also want to acknowledge all of the many ways that you support your child’s learning and our public education system as family members throughout the year, whether it’s helping with homework, reading communications, making sure they’re out the door on time or volunteering in the school. We recognize that this is a partnership and value the relationship with families.

As we wrap up the school year and look ahead to summer, I want to remind families:

• While report cards are shared online, families can request a printed copy through the

  school.

• The school board offers a number of summer learning opportunities for students in

  elementary and secondary school.

• You can also access links to resources to support student learning on the Board website

  to support summer learning.

  I wish everyone a positive end to the school year and a safe, happy and enjoyable summer. We look forward to welcoming back returning students in the new school year.

Community Celebration June 5 - Join us!

Volunteers are still needed for our Community Celebration. Please fill out the Google Form if you can help out.

The event runs rain or shine. In case of rain, we will shift the celebration indoors.

Celebrating Pride Month

As a school board, we remain strongly committed to creating working and learning environments where all students and staff can bring their full identities, feel welcome and valued, and work and learn in an environment that enables them to be successful. We know that our students are more likely to learn, engage, and succeed in school when they know and feel that they matter and belong. This is particularly poignant in June when we recognize and celebrate the history and contributions of our 2SLGBTQI+ community.

During Pride Month (June), Aurora Grove PS, along with all schools in YRDSB, will raise the Progress Pride flag.

On Monday, June 3rd, our whole school will attend an assembly to learn about affirming all identities and Pride month. Then later in the day, the whole school will go outside for the official flag raising and a Pride Parade around the school property.

Throughout the month, led by our GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance), the school will be selling rainbow sprinkle cookies to raise money for The Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity.

Jump Rope for Heart!

Last week we kicked off Jump Rope for Heart! 

Our Event Date is scheduled for June 19th. 

This event teaches our students the importance of giving back and encourages them to learn the EASY healthy habits, so they understand the importance of staying active, eating well, and taking care of their heart and brain health. 

The funds our school raises will help support important heart and stroke research.

Registration opens Thursday, May 30, 2024, and will close on Monday, September 9, 2024.

Last Chance for the Next Lunch Program - Orders Close Tomorrow at 12pm!

Tomorrow, May 22, is the last day to order the final Lunch Program Package for the school year. 

The package is available to order on SchoolCash Online.

Orders are due TOMORROW at 12:00pm. Please get your order in before the deadline as orders after this date and time will not be accepted.

Early Dismissal Thursday, June 27th

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being.  On Thursday, June 27, 2024, an early release day will take place to allow elementary staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day.  These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.  

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 27, 2024 only.  Students will be dismissed early that day at 12:00pm.  Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time.  Families whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

Adult Non-Credit English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

Adult Non-Credit English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are available on an ongoing basis including the summer semester from June 17 to July 26, 2024. Online and in-person classes throughout York Region are available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. & 6 to 9 p.m.

EQAO (Grade 3 & Grade 6)

Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) Assessment for Grade 3 and Grade 6 will be taking place from May 28 - June 6.

• Grade 3 students - Reading, Writing, and Mathematics EQAO assessment from May 28 to May 31, 2024.
• Grade 6 students - Reading, Writing, and Mathematics EQAO assessment from June 3 to June 6, 2024.

Families of students in grade 3 and grade 6 will receive more information soon.

Parent/caregiver series supporting learning about and mental health

The YRDSB Central Mental Health Team is proud to be offering a Learning about Mental Health Presentation Series (LAMPS) . The objective of the series is to promote and enhance mental health literacy. The session is “Supporting Emotion Regulation at Home and at School - A Presentation for parents Caregivers of Kindergartners” and will occur virtually on May 22nd from 6 - 7 p.m. The presentation will focus on coregulation, transitions, social skills, communication,  collaboration and some general strategies that may be beneficial in supporting your children. 

These sessions are offered to any parent/guardian. Translation will be provided in a limited number of  languages.  If your preferred language is not offered, we recommend watching with a friend or family member who is able to translate.

Scholastic Book Fair - Save the Date!

Mark your calendars! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! Our school’s Scholastic Book Fair will take place the week of June 3rd to June 7th, 2024. 

We will also be OPEN during our upcoming evening events, Discover Kindergarten  on May 30th and the Community Celebration on June 5th!

Your investment in your reader helps our whole school. All purchases earn Scholastic Dollars that can be redeemed for books and educational resources for our school’s classrooms and library.
