Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. This year, Diwali fell on the 12th of November and lasts 5 days. Every year Diwali is celebrated to remember light over darkness, and good over evil.
What is the story behind Diwali?
Once upon a time, back in India, a lord named Rama, was sent for 14 years of exile into the forest along with his wife, Sita and brother, Lakshmana. In the forest, Rama defeats the ten-headed demon, Ravana. They encounter many other surprises and challenges on their journey. After 14 years had passed, it was time to return home, and all the villagers lit up the entire path for them with diyas which are clay lamps. Now every diwali we light every corner of our homes with diyas and lights to remove all the evil from our homes.
How do we celebrate Diwali?
Along with lighting diyas, we gather with family, play music, dance, sing songs, and eat traditional foods, snacks, curries, flatbreads, rice, and indian sweets and tea.
You don’t have to light up your entire home for Diwali, even one diya is enough. It is just the thought that counts. Happy Diwali everybody!
